Net Zero Heroes
In this month of Net Zero Heroes, we spotlight Sadam Hanjabam, a remarkable figure from Imphal, Manipur. He’s our 2023 Net Zero Fellow from the Northeastern regional cohort, a dynamic force in the journey towards inclusivity and sustainability.
Sadam is the founder of Ya-All: The Youth Network, dedicated to LGBTQIA+ empowerment in Northeast India. Additionally, he’s a distinguished member of the 2023 Northeastern cohort of SPG’s Net Zero Fellowship. His exceptional contributions, including fundraising, aiding over 2000 individuals, and establishing a transgender quarantine center, demonstrate his unwavering commitment to social change. His recent debut in Amazon Prime’s “Rainbow Rishta” is a powerful glimpse into the lives of LGBTQIA+ individuals in India. It highlights the resilience required to navigate one’s identity and find acceptance in a challenging environment, reflecting Sadam’s personal journey. It also got showcased in this year’s prestigious Mumbai Film Festival.
He represented India at the 2023 United Nations Economic and Social Council Youth Forum in the United States. The three-day which was held at the United Nations headquarters in New York City from April 25-27 under the theme “Accelerating the COVID-19 recovery and full implementation of the 2030 Agenda with and for youth”. Sadam is deeply engaged in addressing the intersection of climate change and the LGBTQIA+ community through his multifaceted initiatives. As an advocate and awareness-raiser, he sheds light on the unique challenges LGBTQIA+ individuals face during climate-related disasters.
Through organizations like Ya-All: The Youth Network, he offers critical support and assistance to LGBTQIA+ individuals affected by climate-related displacement and discrimination. Recognizing the mental health impact of such events, Sadam actively promotes mental health and resilience within the LGBTQIA+ community. As a dedicated member of SPG’s Net Zero Fellowship, he champions inclusive climate activism, advocating for policies that consider the distinct needs of LGBTQIA+ individuals and other marginalized communities within the context of climate change. Sadam Hanjabam’s unwavering commitment to inclusivity and sustainability drives meaningful progress at the intersection of these critical issues.
